The Definition of Audiolingual Method


1.1    The Definition of Audiolingual Method

·         Audiolingual method is also called as Aural-Oral method. The method emphasizes on listening and speaking without neglecting reading and writing. The method is characterized by the use of target language as a means of instruction and communication in the classroom, and by the avoidance of the use of the first language. It drills students in the use of grammatical sentence patterns where the students are given no grammar rules. The grammatical points are taught through examples and practices. It uses dialogues as the main form of language presentation and drills as the main training techniques. There are some strategies are used in Audiolingual method, namely dialogue memorization, backward build up, transformation drill, complete the dialogue, dictation, flashcards, chain drill and the alphabet game.

1.2    The Objectives of Using Audiolingual Method
·      By using Audolingual method students are able to use the target language communicatively. Their students achieve this by forming new habits in the target language and overcoming the old habits of their native language.
·      The errors can be corrected immediately through the teacher’s awareness in order to know what the students want to say and what the difficulties of the students.
·      To develop the students’ abilities in using English to communicate automatically without stopping to think
